Bringing Yourself To Budget

We have all created a budget at some point of time in our life, consciously or unconsciously. But often, people who create all those elaborate plans for a budget don’t really get to the implementation part. There are, of course, a lot of reasons and excuses for the same, the ones most commonly given are that they were too busy, or simply didn’t have the time to get it. Another reason, not usually mentioned, is lack of proper motivation. And in certain cases, some of us are also afraid of what we might or might not discover about our respective financial situations.

Whatever the reason, budgeting is good and it’s not good to keep putting it off. Here are a couple of ways to motivate yourself in implementing your budgets:

* Rewards: When you create a budget, you are able to know where you are financially, and with that knowledge, will find it much easier to achieve your financial goals or other objectives. For instance, you may have a debt waiting to be cleared, a much put-off plan for that vacation you’ve been planning for a while, getting that nice engagement ring you saw in the shop the other day or even plans for your retirement and children’s education. You'll even figure out any kind of adjustments you might have to make to achieve your goals, and by implication, the capacity to find out whether they're working as per your expectations. So think of the rewards, the reason you’re doing all this.

* Benefits: Budgeting involves work, but this isn’t your regular kind of work you perform at your job. It deals with you, yourself, and what you want. It’s not related to your company. You will be the beneficiary in the end, and not your boss. Isn’t that another good reason for you to budget?

* Maintenance: Creating a budget might seem hard, but your real effort is evident only when you maintain and keep an eye on it. Maintenance requires little or no work, so it’s rather easy to do. You must remember, though, that keeping an eye on your budget is very important. During this time, you mustn’t let down your guard.

* Knowledge: As the old saying goes, “Knowledge is Power”. People may beg to differ when it comes to budgets, though. Since budgets invariably lead to the evaluation of one’s financial situation, some people feel they shouldn’t go ahead with it. For instance, somebody deep in debt from loans, unpaid credit card monies etc., ignoring such liabilities “peacefully” would rather not face the bitter truth of where he/she is financially in life. But we shouldn’t be afraid. Learning our financial position is the strongest base we can have. You should remember that whatever you are stays with you, unless you choose to share with others. Never fear.

So what are you waiting for? Get up and go get that budget up and running!!
