Effective Budgets

Creating an effective budget doesn't require a degree in mathematics or economics. It does require, though, a combination of time, motivation, effort, and follow-up. Once you've crossed the initial physical & mental hurdles and have created your budget, you'll find it was worth the trouble.
For a budget to be effective, the following points should be noted:
1. Automation: Using software to create budgets enables easier tracking and better maintenance. These may range from the commonly seen spreadsheet software to specialized personal finance software. Choose one based on your requirements and wherever possible, use freeware or open-source software, to minimize costs.
2. Information: Without adequate information about your various incomes and expenditures, a budget is never complete. Get all those pay sheets, bank statements and bill statements out! Determine your various sources of income (including what grandma sends you every now and then) and figure out your various expenses, big or small. You'll need to account for all this to prepare the perfect budget! Assuming you're using software, put in all the information you've obtained into it. If not, it’s time to get out a book, a pen and a hot cup of coffee!
3. Allocation: Using the information you've gathered, get a rough estimate as to what your total income and total expenditure is to find out which is higher. Hopefully you should have excess income over expenses which means you should decide what you're gonna do with that extra income you've got. The best option is of course saving, though a debt may also be cleared off using it. If, however, it’s your expenses that are higher, you must find out a way to reduce that. This might involve sacrifices such as dropping those plans to get a pizza every night but it will definitely pay off in the long run and make you financially secure. You'll even be able to buy half a dozen pizzas a day, then!
4. Inspection: Creating your budget must be accompanied by a proper evaluation of its 'health'. Inspect your budget periodically, such as once a month, to see if things are running fine or whether adjustments are warranted for.
5. Amendments: Keeping the budget updated is essential and enables the budget to provide a better picture of your financial position. A pay raise for example would affect your total income and, therefore, the overall budget. Change in money outflow like increase/decrease in taxes payable, increase/decrease in value of essential commodities etc. will also affect the budget as a whole.
To sum up, an effective budget is not only about the initial effort made but also the subsequent effort put in to make sure it is working fine.
