If you're prevented from buying or renting a home or an apartment due to your race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status, or disability, you must know that such practices are considered illegal by federal law. If you suspect your rights were violated, you may file a fair housing complaint.

There are various methods to file your complaint:

• Visit http://www.hud.gov/offices/fheo/online-complaint.cfm and fill up the online form there.
• Call this toll-free number 1-800-669-9777.
• Print out a form, complete it, and drop it at or mail it to the following address:

• You may also write a letter mentioning your name and address, the name and address of the person your complaint is about, the address of the house or apartment you were trying to rent or buy, the date when this incident occurred, a short description of what happened, and mail it to the Fair Housing Hub closest to you.
